Alan Christianson, NMD, President
Dr. Alan Christianson is a Phoenix, Arizona-based Naturopathic Physician (NMD) who specializes in natural endocrinology with a focus on thyroid disorders. He founded Integrative Health, a group of physicians that reverses complex and chronic diseases. Accolades include Top Doc recipient in Phoenix magazine. Dr. Christianson co-authored The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Thyroid Disease and authored Healing Hashimoto's a Savvy Patient's Guide. His numerous media appearances include CNN, The Today Show, The Doctors, Insider and Shape Magazine.
Aumatma Shah, ND, Vice President
Dr. Aumatma is a Naturopathic Doctor, with a Master’s in Nutrition, who has been practicing medicine for 10 years. In addition, she is also certified in Restorative Medicine and BodyTalk and brings those modalities into her practice. Dr. Aumatma is also a sought out speaker on topics of Fertility, Women’s Health, and Women’s Empowerment. In her private practice, Dr. Aumatma is solely focused on fertility, pregnancy, post-partum care, and hormonal health for women. Dr. Aumatma was awarded the “Best Alternative Medicine Practitioner″ award; she consults with clients locally in the Bay Area and also works virtually. In her free time, Dr. Aumatma likes to connect with nature, write poetry, and make art – over wine, of course!
Matthew Cavaiola, ND, Treasurer
Dr. Matthew Cavaiola originally hails from Severna Park, Maryland, located between Annapolis and Baltimore. He graduated from the University of Delaware in 2000 with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Biological Sciences and a minor in Human Nutrition and went on to complete a Master’s of Science degree in Human Nutrition in 2004 also from the University of Delaware. In 2008, he completed his doctorate degree in Naturopathic Medicine from the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and in 2009, Dr. Cavaiola completed the last piece of his “formal” education by obtaining his Masters of Science degree in Acupuncture from the Phoenix Institute of Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture. Between SCNM and PIHMA, Dr. Cavaiola devoted over 1500 hours of clinical and didactic training in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Dr. Cavaiola is a licensed Naturopathic Doctor in both California and Arizona and maintains a license to practice acupuncture in the state of Arizona. He focuses his practice on optimizing wellness throughout the aging process and determining the root cause of disease. He uses natural therapeutics to treat both acute and chronic conditions including: Men's and Women's endocrine disorders, such as low Testosterone, Menopause, Thyroid imbalances and Adrenal Fatigue, Pain syndromes, Cancer, Autoimmune Diseases, Cardiovascular Disease and other metabolic conditions, like Diabetes. Therapies that he uses in his practice include: Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT), clinical nutrition, acupuncture, including facial rejuvenation acupuncture, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), vitamin and mineral intravenous therapy, chelation therapy and high dose intravenous Vitamin C therapy.
Dr. Cavaiola is currently core faculty and assistant professor at Bastyr University California and has a private practice, the Phoenix Anti- Aging Clinic in the Ahwatukee community of Phoenix, AZ. He also teaches both Anatomy and Physiology and Introductory Nutrition online for Rio Salado College.
Adrienne Stewart, NMD, Secretary
Dr. Adrienne Stewart received her doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine with Highest Academic Achievement from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine. She was the first Naturopathic Doctor to attend Dr. Andrew Weil’s elective rotation at the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine. Dr. Stewart’s residency at Southwest Naturopathic Medical Center focused on primary care for patients with acute and chronic disease. Prior to medical school, she graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Arizona, where she received a Bachelor of Science in Nutritional Sciences with a minor in Chemistry.
Ashley Burkman, ND, Director
Dr. Ashley Burkman received her Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degree from the National University of Health Sciences in Chicago. She practices at Connecticut Natural Health Specialists, LLC, in Manchester, CT. While she has a varied practice, she has a particular interest in endocrinology. Commitment to the growth of her profession has lead her to be appointed to the Board of Trustees of her Alma Mater and addition to private practice is an adjunct faculty member of the University of New England School of Osteopathic Medicine, which allows her to teach family practice osteopathic residents about functional and nutritional medicine. An Iowa native, she catches every Iowa Hawkeye football game she can, spends time with family and friends and has a soft spot for cats.
Lorinda Sorensen, ND, MSAc, Director
Dr. Lorinda Sorensen is an assistant professor at National University of Health Sciences, where she teaches classes in naturopathic philosophy, endocrinology, women’s’ health, as well as classes in botanical medicine, and she is considered to be the local expert in botanicals by both the Naturopathic and Chiropractic medicine students and faculty. Dr. Sorensen attended Bastyr University, where she received both her doctor of Naturopathic medicine (ND) degree and a Master's of Science in Acupuncture (MSA). She has practiced in Washington state, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois and New Zealand, where she was a consultant for the health products industry and in naturopathic education. In the past she has been a committee member of the Nebraska’s Acupuncture Licensing Act Task Force for Rules & Regulations LB 270. She currently serves on the board and several committees of the Illinois Association of Naturopathic Physicians, is a member of the American Herbalists Guild, the American Botanical Council and she actively participants in being a mentor to students.
Leila Turner, ND
Leila Turner, licensed Naturopathic Doctor (ND), grew up in Northern California surrounded by alternative medicine and redwood trees. She graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz, with a BA in Biology and a BA in Psychology. In 2007 she co-founded the Naturopathic Medical Student Association. Upon graduating from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine (SCNM) in 2007, she was awarded the prestigious SCNM Student Leadership Award and the Daphne Blayden Award in recognition of academic excellence, compassion and perseverance. Dr. Turner was awarded a 2-year residency in women’s health and general medicine at SCNM Medical Center. Upon completing her residency in 2009, she joined Naturopathic Specialists where her private practice currently thrives. She is Adjunct Professor at SCNM where she teaches students to become physicians. She was also awarded the 2011 SCNM Alumni Award. Dr Turner's approach with her patients includes a wide spectrum of naturopathic therapeutic modalities including nutrition, botanicals and homeopathy; she works with each patient to create an individualized, effective and realistic treatment plan. She is a dynamic public speaker throughout Arizona, an empowering educator and a compassionate physician guiding her patients to transform their own health.
